The Wedding Planner . . .

much more than a dodgy J Lo film where she ends up nicking the intended, a wedding planner is actually an integral part to many weddings these days. Okay, it’s a pretty new phenomenon, don’t tell me – back in your day the wedding was planned by;

  • the mother of the bride . . . whether anybody was happy with it or not, it was her final duty and opportunity to poke her nose in where it was not always wanted (until the grandchildren arrived of course)
  • the bride . . . if she could get a few words in edgewise and lay down the law on just a few details . . . no Mom, I hate lemon, it’s my wedding and I want chocolate cake with chocolate frosting
  • the mother of the groom . . .yeah, right, good effort
  • the groom . . . ah, sorry, none of your business really, just make sure that you turn up in good time and that the best man has the ring handy

Enter – The Wedding Planner

Wedding planners help to make the big day a truly memorable occasion to cherish forever, leaving the happy couple (the bride and her Mom) to enjoy the day without many of the frustrations and looming disasters which inevitably threaten to spoil it. Weddings don’t just plan themselves you know, there’s lots to think about;

  • the dresses for both the bride and her attendants, including underwear (my ass doesn’t really look like that you know, I’m wearing a bushel), the shoes, the head gear, the jewelry
  • the dress for the mother (very important that she blends in well with the color scheme yet stands out too, but without taking anything away from the beautiful bride)
  • whatever the guys will be wearing, yes, they are important but . . . ya know!
  • the wedding ceremony
  • the wedding caterers
  • the wedding cake
  • the wedding flowers
  • the wedding cars
  • the wedding  photographer
  • the wedding favors
  • the honeymoon
  • the hen party
  • the bachelor party

So how much of the wedding organizing does the wedding planner actually do?

Wedding Planners – From Wedding to Wedding

The role of a wedding planner does vary from wedding to wedding, no two jobs are the same, although ultimately they all have the same goal, to help the bride, the groom and the brides Mom to have the best wedding they can possibly have (and not to mention that statistically they have a very good chance of being in the divorce courts within the next couple of years). Generally speaking, the happy couple with have a consultation with the wedding planner in the first instance to find out exactly what each party expects of the other, whether the wedding planner will be in charge of all of the planning or just the co-ordination of the big day. This is also when the subject of budget should be discussed. Let’s face it, getting married is very expensive (but often not as expensive as getting a divorce) and although we all dream of, well, the wedding of our dreams, in reality it is not always affordable and some concessions have to be made.

Wedding planners should be in constant touch with the bride and groom, particularly as the big day approaches, and on the wedding day itself as it’s often surprising at how many of the finer details need to be addressed.

The best way to imagine what a wedding planner does . . . think of it as being the brides personal assistant doing as much, or as little as is necessary to make her wedding day the most perfect day of her life.
